Our Church History
Fifth Street Baptist Church in Levelland, TX was organized in November 1921. Hockley County was first organized in January 1921 as one of the final two counties in Texas opened for settlement. In November of 1921, the first church was organized in the newly established Hockley City. The church was called the First Missionary Baptist Church. The name was later changed to Fifth Street Baptist Church. The church organizational meeting took place in the one-room school building which was located one block east of what was designated as the Courthouse square and on the south side of Houston street. Rev. Curry, who was a Baptist Missionary and the church's first pastor, and thirteen area residents were present at this organizational meeting. The church met twice a month in that one-room school house for a year. The town's name was changed to Levelland in 1922.
The church has been a constant source of temperate, hardworking, patriotic people who have impacted the culture of this community significantly. In 2009, the State of Texas awarded Fifth Street Baptist Church a Historical Marker. It is located in front of the church. God has seen us through the Great Depression, the dust bowl, WWII, many droughts, and trials and illnesses, but has given us many blessings along the way. During the leadership of Bro. Merle Fulmer, the sanctuary was renovated and the Buddy Ellison Building was added including a big new kitchen. Later, under the leadership of Bro. Roy Prather, the Educational Building, Staff Offices, and activity center were renovated.
Our current pastor is Justin Owens. Justin has served in ministry for 17 years including 6 years as a foreign missionary to Estonia and Ukraine. He and his wife have been married for 23 years and have four children. Our current deacons are Larry Beadles, Clifton Turner, Dave Campbell, Cameron Dockery, and Jim Ellison. We cherish the memories and good friends who have been part of our history through the years and pray for God's continued blessings as we continue His work in this area.
